The Violent Face Of Grand Corruption

2016-11-30-1480521613-883422-00223785.jpeg

Exposing corruption has always been a dangerous job. It’s about to become even more dangerous, especially for those of us targeting one of the most corrupt industries – oil, gas and mining. A high-stakes sector, it is prone to opaqueness, vested economic interests and unscrupulous activities. At the same time, it’s an industry that can – when well managed – be an engine for growth and poverty eradication in many poor nations.

Citizens working to foster transparency of the extractive sector are under attack. As liberal and democratic values recede worldwide and the unbridled hunger for natural resources continues, those calling out corrupt practices are facing harassment, legal and extralegal obstacles and, in worst case scenarios, death. Fighting for a more equitable and sustainable management of natural resources has never been as treacherous, as testified by Publish What You Pay (PWYP) members on the ground in a new publication documenting cases of repression around the world.

In Niger, Ali Idrissa, a transparency activist and member of the PWYP Board of Directors, has weathered several discretionary arrests in 2014, surveillance and, most recently, attempts to discredit his call for an accountable management of Niger’s uranium reserves in the form of vicious smear campaigns. In the context of a heightened political and economic crisis, transparency fighters like Ali are the first in line when the government is looking to silence its critics. Meanwhile, Niger stands at the very bottom of the Human Development Index while being the world’s fourth largest producer of uranium – enough to power every third light bulb in France.

Ali’s story is one of many. In fact, the numbers surfacing are terrifying. In 2015, 185 environmental/land defenders were killed, 42 of which were opposing mining and other extractive projects, according to Global Witness. That’s an increase from 116 killings in 2014 and 92 in 2013. There is strong evidence that these represent only the tip of the iceberg: for every reported, high-level case of murder, many more go unreported. Authoritarian and corrupt government officials and corporate executives are attempting to silence those questioning the unscrupulous exploitation of natural resources around the world. When people legitimately want a say in the stewardship of their collective natural endowment, they often experience pushback from political and corporate entities seeking to defend their own interests.

As we celebrate the International Anti-Corruption Day on 9 December, let us remember that transparency often comes at great personal cost to anti-corruption campaigners like Ali. The global anti-corruption movement owes respect and protection to him and his colleagues. As transparency activists from around the world gather in Panama City this week to participate in the International Anti-Corruption Conference, securing civic space and fundamental civil liberties will feature high on the agenda. As long as civil society isn’t able to freely organise, speak out and ask uncomfortable questions of governments, transparency and accountability will remain distant dreams and those who exploit natural resources for their own private gain will continue to be able to operate with impunity.

Together we can create the momentum needed to reverse repression against citizens who simply want to reap some of the benefits derived from the exploitation of their natural endowment. Working closer together with human and women’s rights activists, anti-corruption campaigners and environmental defenders, we will be stronger to take on that fight.

You Are Entirely Up To You

These times are quite fraught with desperation for all of us. We look outside ourselves for leadership; we look outside for community. When the truth is we are seeking something that is already within us.

It’s in that precious moment that we actually have a clear understanding. Our uniqueness of being is where we truly exist. People naturally gravitate to those who believe in themselves, à la Oprah, Beyoncé, Steve Jobs.

It starts with you liking one thing about yourself. Be it singing, dancing, styling, skill with numbers, reliability – trust this as your core.

We all come in with an authentic gift. We often dismiss opportunities to grow and welcome development. And when all is said and done, if we don’t get what we want, we feel short changed.

When we are confused, we seek advice. Somebody we know tells us how they think we should what we want. Ironically, it’s usually their way. We follow suit, all the while we are aware that something’s off. Listen to your gut, trust your intuition. Something’s off because you are doing it the way somebody else is doing it, not your way. It can’t work if you are not being your authentic you.

There is no greater time than right now to seek that passion, or be open to new discoveries. Follow your gut. Don’t give up on your dream; simplify and keep modifying. Keep your day job and learn to invest both your dream and your day-to-day life.

The minute anybody else attempts to undermine you, don’t doubt your core for a moment. Take that as your valuable warning. If we don’t contribute one authentic thing about ourselves, then others won’t provide anything either. In other words, don’t be clueless, be smart!

I’m a great believer of jumping in, but make sure to find the right expert. Treat your dream like you are already paid for the job. Do your homework. Email, contact, communicate – research before you dive head over feet. Be clear what makes you happy, more authentic. Focus on that one attribute that is yours. No one can take it from you.

Even the most ardent new age seekers among us feel that we’ve been sold a lot of airy-fairy nonsense, when what we’re all looking for is something reliable and actual: a higher goal that comes to life in this world, not the next.

Most of us cry out to a benevolent force sooner or later. Why am I here? And when we hear silence, we panic. We grab the first thought and wing it, and hope it goes viral.

Pinning our hopes with a fixed dream is disastrous. Be open to modification. Because the dream has to start from somewhere, it never comes in whole. It might not look exactly like you thought it would. Go with the flow.

A way to stimulate your transformation is by making a commitment: Try investing four hours a month to your quest.

One thing you can you do daily is to check in. Take a private moment and visualize yourself in action, doing the thing you love. Make it as real as possible. See yourself with the thing you most want, and know that you can have it. Every time we internally see our exalted selves in motion, it projects out to everyone we meet and attracts to us a world of opportunity.

As Oprah so eloquently expressed, “Change your thoughts and change your world.”

‘Gilmore Girls’ Tackles Therapy In The Most Heartwarming Way

Diehard fans may have flocked to the Netflix’s “Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life,” for the quips, the pop culture references and all the coffee. However, it’s the revival’s quieter, more solemn moments that deserve true praise ― particularly when it comes to therapy.

In real life, seeking psychological support is often viewed as an unsavory byproduct of “losing your mind” rather than treating a very common health condition. Research even shows that many people with mental health issues avoid going to a therapist because they’re afraid of being judged or shamed by peers.

But in Stars Hollow, therapy is just a natural part of grief. And it’s presented in the most nonchalant and obvious way ― just as it should be.

During the first episode of the four-part series, Lorelai Gilmore recommends that her mother Emily sees someone to help process the loss of her husband Richard:

“I’m not crazy,” Emily retorts at the suggestion.

“No, you’re in pain,” Lorelai argues. “This is uncharted territory. If it might help, what’s the harm?”

Emily concedes and the show then chronicles her ― and eventually also Lorelai’s ― journey through therapy as they talk about their grief over Richard’s death and their tumultuous mother-daughter relationship.

It’s a powerful subplot of the revival that deserves attention. The show not only shines a light on therapy, it normalizes it.

Highlighting stigma and mental health access issues

Emily’s initial and instinctual reaction to therapy is reflective of the cultural attitude toward mental health: That seeking support is synonymous with “crazy.”

Even though it’s this exact mindset that needs to be eradicated, it’s critical that it also gets airtime. That way it can also be shut down, according to Srijan Sen, a professor at the University of Michigan Depression Center.

“Because of the stigma in some parts of our society, many people don’t realize how many of their friends, colleagues and family have received therapy,” Sen told The Huffington Post. “TV shows can start conversations and create an environment where people feel comfortable talking about therapy.”

TV shows can start conversations and create an environment where people feel comfortable talking about therapy.
Srijan Sen, University of Michigan Depression Center

Of course, the revival’s portrayal of mental health help didn’t come without other pitfalls. Lorelai and Emily’s therapist, Claudia, wasn’t overly stellar at her job. Aside from one interjection to let the duo know that “anything is allowed” in therapy aside from “physical confrontation” (which is true), she remained mostly silent except for when she announced that their time was up. Viewers don’t really get to see how she interacts with the pair as her clients.

Lorelai also has an awkward, out-of-office encounter with Claudia, who is trying out for the town musical Lorelai is helping to oversee. It could be argued that this is a peril of living in a small city like Stars Hollow ― and an issue that also presents itself in real life.

Research shows there’s a large shortage of mental health providers, specifically outside of cities. This leaves little options for people seeking support (and puts a person in a position where they may, say, have a therapist who is also involved in their musical theater production).

“Access to mental health professionals is a huge problem and it is exacerbated because providers tend to be concentrated in cities,” Sen explained. “There are some evidence-based alternatives to in-person therapy such as telepsychiatry and web-based and mobile technology tools but we really need to get more professionals.”

Why this representation ultimately matters

Therapy’s exposure in pop culture is critical to dismantling the misconceptions people have about seeking mental health support.

“When it is a TV character that you connect with, seeing them engage in therapy and benefit from the experience can really help,” Sen said. “TV shows can really help to convey how common these problems are and help viewers who may be suffering to recognize symptoms, feel less alone and hopefully get help.”

When it is a TV character that you connect with, seeing them engage in therapy and benefit from the experience can really help.

Approximately one in five American adults will experience a mental health issue in a given year. That number increases when you factor in kids and young adults. The fact is that psychological conditions ― whether acute or chronic ― are strikingly common. It’s only fitting that TV represents that.

And, bottom line, accurate pop culture portrayals can send the message that seeing a mental health professional is just as critical as seeing a primary care doctor.

“Taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body,” Sen said.

The Gilmores would probably agree.

They’ve Given Us a Great Battlefield. Let’s Mass for the Battle

In a previous piece, I wrote that the Republicans’ shocking refusal to let President Obama fill the Supreme Court vacancy is an effort to steal from millions of Americans who helped re-elect this president won fair and square: namely, the right to have our guy shape the Court if the opportunity should arise.

It is understood by Americans on both the right and the left, I argued, that this is part of what is at stake in a presidential election. We won that power, and now we get to collect our winnings.

The Republicans are not just denying the president his rightful powers, still more fundamentally they are violating the rights of millions of American citizens under the Constitution.

And we are not going to stand for it–so I concluded.

That conclusion, actually, was really a hope expressed as a prediction. We on the liberal side have let these Republicans get away with so much, in recent years, without making them pay for their disgraceful conduct. But the Republicans have now handed us a most opportune moment to rise up, putting together a popular movement to fight the Republicans on this latest, most important form of obstructionism.

This Republican refusal to play their proper role sets up a battlefield we should be glad to fight on. There are two main reasons this fight is opportune:

1) The stakes – whether or not control of the Supreme Court can be shifted from the toxic domination of the right-wingers over to the liberal side – are so high that we would be wise to mobilize ALL our political resources to achieve victory.

The Conservative Five who have prevailed in various 5-4 decisions over the past decade have done great damage to America, and we cannot let this chance to take that power away slip by.

We can certainly hope that President Obama and the Democrats in the Senate will do their part to win this battle. But whether they rise to the occasion or not we the people should help keep attention focused on this issue and intensify the pressure on the Republicans to do the right thing or suffer the political consequences.

Victory either way: either getting the Court majority we’ve earned fair and square, or pummeling the Republicans in public opinion so effectively that they lose both the White House and the Senate, and we then get the Court majority anyway.

2) This latest Republican move opens a window into a whole world of the Republican darkness.

The Republican effort to prevent President Obama from performing the important role which the American people hired him did not, of course, begin with this Supreme Court vacancy. Their across-the-board obstructionism has not only been an affront to this particular president, but it manifests a contempt for the Constitution they’ve taken an oath to protect and defend. And their deliberate disabling of our political system – giving us the least productive Congresses in our history – represents a betrayal of the nation.

This latest move opens all that up to display to the American people. Their power play here about the Supreme Court reveals a political party that puts its own power above everything – no matter the cost to our nation, its political norms, and its most sacred values.

The battle they’ve chosen enables us to expose all that, and in a presidential election year, that could have a powerful impact.

What we should insist on is not just that hearings be held and votes be cast in the Senate. If that’s all we insist on, the Republicans are free to engage in a sham– going through the motions while holding fast to their determination to deny this president his right to name the next justice on the Supreme Court. If that’s all we insist on, they can grant our demands and leave us having won nothing, and allow them to get away with disgraceful conduct yet again.

We should demand not only that they conduct hearings and a vote, but also that they confirm any nominee who is clearly worthy by the traditional criteria: if the president nominates someone who: 1) shows high professional qualifications, 2) possesses good moral character and 3) is in the mainstream of American jurisprudence – the Senate is obliged to confirm.

That is the American tradition — and the implicit rule in the Constitution – regarding how the “advise and consent” role should be performed.

So we should insist not only on their going through the motions, but on their confirming a worthy nominee put forward by the president we elected to have the power to put his stamp on the Court, if an opening arose.

As luck would have it – bad luck for the right, good luck for those who supported the re-election of this president — the opportunity has arisen: their justice has died, while our guy is president.

Sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose. Accepting such loss is part of what is required to “protect and defend” the Constitution. The Republicans’ refusal to accept Barack Obama’s legitimate role as president is — in spirit — a violation of their oath of office.

Let us, as the grassroots, hold their feet to the fire. Let us have a popular movement arise to march onto this battlefield. (Perhaps people could begin organizing a Yuge March on Washington to converge on the Capital in the days before the Senate votes on an Obama nominee.) Let us bring all our forces to bear on this pivotal battle.

The message of this movement should be: “You Republicans have a choice. Either honor your responsibilities under the Constitution, or we will tar you with this betrayal all the way to November when the American people will send you off into oblivion.”

7 Reasons for the New Nature Movement

2016-02-11-1455218624-4288199-KathyandMatthew3yrs.jpg

Martin Luther King Jr. taught us, by word and example, that any movement — any culture — will fail if it cannot paint a picture of a world that people will want to go to. As others have said, his speech was not called “I Have a Nightmare.”

For decades, our culture has struggled with two addictions, to oil and to despair. It’s pretty clear by now that we can’t kick one of those habits without kicking the other. Yet, for many Americans, perhaps most of us, thinking about the future conjures up images of “Blade Runner,” “Mad Max” or Cormac McCarthy’s “The Road”: a post-apocalyptic dystopia stripped of nature. We seem drawn to that flame.

It’s a dangerous fixation. Think how children and young people must feel today, growing up in a time when so many adults seem to accept, with a shrug, only darkness ahead.

The key questions here are: How do we change our vision of the future? Where do we start? Here’s one suggestion: reconceive environmentalism and sustainability — help them evolve into a larger movement that can touch every part of society.

Here are seven reasons for the New Nature Movement:

• The more high-tech we become, the more nature we need. Even as biodiversity and traditional connections to nature fade, an almost religious faith in technology suggests that, well, we don’t need nature much anymore. We hear talk of a “post-biological” era in which human beings are optimally enhanced by technology. Yet, we’ve only begun to study how more engagement in the natural world can optimize human health and intelligence. Technology will always be with us, but as it grows, we’ll need an antidote to its downside.

• As of 2008, more than half of the world’s population lives in towns and cities. If human beings are to enjoy nature, they’ll likely have to do it in urban areas. This transformation will produce one of two outcomes: either the end of meaningful daily experience in nature, or the beginning of a new kind of city – and a new view of our role in and our definition of nature. Unless we choose that second option, the diminishment of our humanity and the further destruction of the natural world are guaranteed.

• Adults have nature-deficit disorder, too. In recent years, the children and nature movement has revealed a vein of hope. That effort has brought people together across party lines and religious and economic divisions. But the children and nature movement will not succeed unless adults come to see the importance of our own connection to the natural world — not only for health and well being, but for the preservation of the natural world.

• Environmentalism needs new tools for unprecedented challenges. The environmental movement’s many successes did not prepare us for even larger, interrelated global challenges, including climate change, biodiversity collapse, and the disconnection of people — particularly children — from the natural world. A few years ago, poll after poll showed that environmental concern, in some areas, had dropped to its lowest point since before Earth Day 1970. Why? Economic recession. A well-financed campaign of disinformation. An inability to describe a great future. But in recent years, conservation has begun to broaden its base, by arguing that in addition to reducing toxins, we must guarantee that all people, especially children, receive the gifts of nature.

• Sustainability alone is not sustainable. Though we don’t have a better word to replace it, the word sustain suggests stasis. Fairly or not, much of the public views energy conservation and the development of alternative energy sources as essential but ultimately technical goals. We need more than stasis; we need to produce human energy (health, intelligence, creativity, joy) through nature.

This is about more than what nature can do for us. If we do not recognize our interdependence with other species and their habitats, if we do not learn to love them through experience, we will never respect the intrinsic value of the natural world which exists beyond human needs.

• Conservation is not enough. Now we need to “create” nature. Even if we conserve every square foot of remaining wilderness, and we should, it won’t be enough to guarantee the biodiverse habitats that humans and other organisms will require to thrive. In addition to conservation, we must now restore or create natural habitats on our farms and ranches, in our cities, neighborhoods, commercial buildings, yards, and on our roofs. We’ll need the true greening of America and the rest of the world.

• We have a choice. If we see only an apocalyptic future, that’s what we’ll get, or close to it. But imagine a society in which our lives become as immersed in nature as they are in technology, every day, where we live, work, learn and play. Imagine a future in which our intelligence and creativity, our ability to feel and be fully alive is enhanced by more frequent contact with the natural world.

We’re already seeing a convergence of a New Nature Movement focused on human restoration through the natural world. A new river is gathering force. At its headwaters, an expanding body of scientific evidence links the human experience in the natural world to better physical and mental health, enhanced cognitive abilities, and a deeper environmentalism.

Now comes a cascade of hope: biophilic design of new homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, cities; reconciliation ecology and human-nature social capital; restorative homes and businesses; ecopsychology and other forms of nature therapy; pediatricians who prescribe nature; citizen naturalists; nature-based schools; the Slow Food and simplicity movements; organic gardening; urban agriculture, vanguard ranching and other forms of the new agrarianism; the Creation Care movement, and of course the children and nature movement, and more.

As these currents join, they’ll lead us to a different view of the future. It won’t be perfect, but it’ll surely be better.

In fact, precisely because of the environmental challenges we face, the future will belong to the nature-smart — those individuals, families, businesses and political and social leaders who develop a deeper understanding of the transformative power of the natural world, and who balance the virtual with the real. That’s a picture worth painting, a future worth creating.

But first, we have to imagine it.

Crossroads in Grief

2016-02-17-1455745342-8137211-image.jpeg

Once upon a time there was an ordinary mother, wife, daughter, sister, aunt and friend who woke up on a beautiful August Sunday morning when suddenly the world as she knew it came to a screeching halt. In a split second a glass ceiling for complete happiness appeared. Gone was the carefree heart and the possibilities for a peaceful future disappeared in a blink of an eye.

Three months after Amy’s sudden passing, I found myself needing somewhere to release the confusion, agony and pain. Of course others were willing to listen with compassion as I cried but I could tell they were unable to comprehend my new language. Gone was their confident loved one or friend replaced by an alien with dead eyes who sort of resembled that woman who they used to know.

Since it was too difficult to write in a journal, I bought an ipad and started a blog. From the first word I wrote, I made a secret pledge to myself that I would remain true to my heart and the devastation which has followed losing my child. Don’t say what they want to hear but rather allow your heart to speak its authentic truth.

When I discovered the comment on my blog in December from HuffPost expressing an interest in cross-posting one of my entries, I panicked. Oh no, if I share my raw painful thoughts from my fragile grieving heart without searching for a silver lining I will surely be ridiculed or misunderstood. Does this mean I need to start sugarcoating my words and paint imaginary silver linings too? Isn’t everyone searching for a happy ending? My lesson has been that I have not been criticized for my honesty and people are extraordinarily compassionate when you are willing to share your bleeding heart. Thank you.

Reality is that I have not found much light on the other side of losing Amy. There are still days where I think “all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put humpty together again” applies to me. Two and one-half years has not fixed me. Do I need to hitch a ride with Dorothy to visit the “great and powerful Oz?”

Others farther along without their child reassure me that you cannot hurry grief and my current state of my heart is a natural reaction based on where I am on the timeline nightmare after total devastation. The confusion comes from within as I attempt to re-engage in life among the blessed unscathed ones who insinuate otherwise.

Who sets the timetable for how long it is appropriate to grieve a child? Should grievers be seen and not heard? Could anyone truly expect me to suck it up and move forward to live my life and just accept my child’s death under the 10,000 sorrows of life catagory?

Personally, I do not believe I have handled my grief well. It has swallowed me up and spit out a new unrecognizable version of me. The family and friend list continue to dwindle so the support network has changed. The telemarketers are winning on my caller-ID list. Of course the short list of steadfast friends and family remain a huge source of comfort and I am genuinely grateful for their continued love and support. By now I do realize that outside of this intimate new formed tribe of support who have witnessed my struggle, my tragedy is yesterday’s news which makes perfect sense to me. However, Amy is missing from my life and that is still breaking news to my heart.

While I have met other grieving parents and siblings who have helped to offset some of the loneliness, I know first-hand that their crosses of loss are equally heavy and it is important to respect the invisible boundaries created by our individual losses. We know we cannot fix or hurry our grief. We search for distractions and beg for ways to navigate through the rest of our lives as we search for light and hope that we can trust again. No one needs to point out our loving family and friends who are still here with us. We know. Just remember there are no spares in a family so to insinuate that our loved ones can just close the ranks is a ridiculous concept. We realize the depth of our loss has forever changed us and our life. We survive yet often marvel that we can.

Regardless of my timeline in grief, I personally find myself standing at a sink-or-swim crossroad. I am weary and need rest from the relentless grief which consumes so much of me now. Aha moment — I cannot continue feeling so sad as it is now taking a toll on my physical health. So now what? Does anyone have a magic wand to wave over me and or know where to find a reset button in my heart? Should I be praying for a miracle although the last time I did that those prayers went unanswered?

I am not just bellyaching. Despite all of my efforts to heal, i.e., continued counseling, facing my grief head on, helping others, blogging, embracing religion, losing religion, redecorating, room closing, searching for distractions, meditating, etc., I still feel limited under the glass ceiling of incomprehensible grief.

So here I stand at the crossroads desperately seeking a new direction on this jackhammered path which is not as loaded with quicksand and land mines as I attempt to rebuild my battered and broken mind, body and spirit.

Always remembering Amy.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

After Protesting at a Trump Rally, I’m Being Targeted By Islamophobes

Last month some friends and I stood in silent protest at a Trump rally in Rock Hill SC and were unceremoniously escorted out.

As a hijab-wearing Muslim woman, I garnered a lot of media attention. The coverage and response was overwhelmingly supportive and encouraging. However, there was some vile chatter that attempted to paint me as a possible terrorist. I ignored the ridiculous accusations made against me because I thought anyone who took the time to read the libelous claims would be able to see the failed logic in their conclusions. However, I was disheartened to learn that some folks, who’ve known me for 30 plus years, actually believed some of the claims!

Although it was hurtful to hear, to a certain degree, I can understand that people are afraid. There are those who are carrying out heinous acts claiming to be doing so in the name of Islam. However, those people are NOT following the dictates of Islam. They have taken things out of context and twisted teachings to serve their nefarious purposes. Islamic scholars and organizations from America and around the world consistently speak out against such acts, yet most Americans don’t hear about those condemnations.

What Americans do hear a lot about is erroneous information from a small, but well-funded, interconnected network of Islamophobes who spread fear by diligently disseminating misinformation about Islam, Muslims and American Islamic organizations. The result is that anyone who’s attended or worked with, pretty much any, Islamic organization in America could then be accused of being a terrorist by association. It’s reminiscent of McCarthy era Red Scare tactics and I’m concerned that false insinuations might cause me problems similar to what victims of McCarthyism faced.

I discovered that the slanderous comments about me had the same ring to them that the Islamophobic Network has used to malign many other Muslims and organizations. The following are some of the distorting terms/concepts used to instill fear of Islam and Muslims:

• “Sharia creep” or any concerns about Muslims trying to instill Sharia law in America. Sharia is the rules Muslims are required to follow. It covers all aspects of Islamic life including things like praying 5 times a day, wearing a head covering, and eating permissible (Halal) food. To pass laws making it a crime to follow sharia law, like some lawmakers are attempting to do, is to make practicing Islam illegal. Can you imagine making it illegal for Jews to pray in public, wear a yarmulke or have food marked as Kosher? A discredited Islamophobe concocted this particular fabrication. Do not believe information from sources that say Muslims are trying to force Sharia law in America, it is not true.

• “Islamist” is a term used by the Islamophobic Network. Seeing or hearing this term is a red flag that the information may come from a biased source.

• Insinuations that the Holy Land Foundation was funding terrorist activities on American soil. The Holy Land Foundation was a US charity set up to send money to hospitals and orphanages in Palestine. After 9/11 it was shut down and the leaders were accused of funding terrorism. They were charged with sending funds to hospitals, orphanages and charitable organizations in Palestine which Hamas controlled. The Holy Land Foundation was not accused of terrorism against America, yet the Islamophobic Network treats this case as such. Don’t trust information that points to the Holy Land Foundation case as relevant to terrorism in America.

• The term “unindicted co-conspirator”. An unindicted co-conspirator is “a person or entity that is alleged in an indictment to have engaged in conspiracy, but who is not charged in the same indictment.” Hundreds of American Islamic organizations and Muslims were listed as unindicted co-conspirators in the Holy Land Foundation case. They were never charged with anything, but the Islamophobic Network uses the term to paint the organizations and anyone who is associated with them as terrorist supporters. If they really were supporters of terrorism, they would not be allowed to operate in America.

According to a report from the Center for American Progress, the following organizations and key individuals make up the Islamophobic Network. These people are being paid well to spread misinformation about Islam and Muslims. If these names are linked as a source for information about Islam and Muslims, do further research to find the whole story.

➢ Society of Americans for National Existence – David Yerushalmi
➢ The Middle East Forum – Daniel Pipes
➢ Stop Islamization of America – Robert Spencer, Pamela Gellar and David Horowitz
➢ Jihad Watch – Robert Spencer and David Horowitz
➢ David Horowitz Freedom Center – David Horowitz and Robert Spencer
➢ Center for Security Policy – Frank Gaffney and David Yerushalmi
➢ Act! For America – Brigitte Gabriel
➢ The Clarion Project – Rabbi Raphael Shore
➢ Walid Shoebat is another Islamophobe to be leery of. He has been discredited but continues to garner support.

The Islamophobic Network provides information to many politicians, religious leaders, lawmakers and media outlets who accept what they say without checking further. It seems that some in America feel the need to always have a “Boogeyman”, and right now its Muslims.

When American politicians use Islamophobic rhetoric, it causes fear to spread and incites violence. It gives license to unstable people to take hateful action against Muslims. And it becomes a recruitment tool for organizations that have socio/political agendas against America.

Another consequence of the spread of Islamophobia is that Muslims may be less inclined to become engaged in public discourse for fear of becoming targets of the Islamophobic Network. Although there is a part of me that is a little worried about how their slanderous lies might affect me if I continue to speak out, I refuse to live in fear. I put my faith in God and ask for strength to stand up and speak out when necessary.

American Consultants Rx states that it will continue to strive to assist those in need.

6 Famous Artists Talk About What It’s Like to Overcome Fear and Create Beauty

Long before I was publishing articles for the world to read, I wrote in a private document. I did this for more than a year. There were a variety of reasons and excuses that I used to rationalize why I wasn’t sharing my writing with others, but in many ways it boiled down to fear.

Here’s what I didn’t realize at the time: Fear isn’t something that must be avoided. It is not an indicator that you’re doing things wrong. Fear is simply a cost that all artists have to pay on the way to doing meaningful work.

Obviously, not everything that is thought or written or created needs to be shared. In our age, where everyone has a voice and a platform, there is a lot of noise created.

However, if you have a story inside of you, I think you should share it. If you have an idea that you’d like to create, I think you should build it. If you have a dream that would make the world a slightly better place, then I think it’s your responsibility to deliver it to the rest of us. But it won’t be easy. All artists deal with fears, self-doubts, questions, and a roller coaster ride of emotions.

With that in mind, here are six passages from famous authors, actors, and artists on overcoming fear and unleashing your creativity.

Fear Tells Us What We Have to Do
steven pressfield

Are you paralyzed with fear? That’s a good sign. Fear is good. Like self-doubt, fear is an indicator. Fear tells us what we have to do. Remember our rule of thumb: The more scared we are of a work or calling, the more sure we can be that we have to do it.

Resistance is experienced as fear; the degree of fear equates the strength of Resistance. Therefore, the more fear we feel about a specific enterprise, the more certain we can be that that enterprise is important to us and to the growth of our soul.
— Steven Pressfield, The War of Art

In the beginning, it is more important to start than it is to succeed. It is only through starting that we reveal the opportunity for growth.

Start Small
seth godin

What we need to do is say, ‘What’s the smallest, tiniest thing that I can master and what’s the scariest thing I can do in front of the smallest number of people that can teach me how to dance with the fear?’ Once we get good at that, we just realize that it’s not fatal. And it’s not intellectually realize – we’ve lived something that wasn’t fatal. And that idea is what’s so key — because then you can do it a little bit more.
— Seth Godin (full interview)

Mental toughness is a skill and like any skill it can be developed. Learning how to overcome fear is just like building a new habit. Start small and increase slowly.

Run to the Roar
tina essmaker

When you are thinking about doing something and it feels scary, when it feels like this big lion is waiting at the finish line and he’s roaring and he’s ferocious and he’s going to tear you apart… you should just run toward that lion anyway. Run to the roar.
— Tina Essmaker (full interview)

It’s not your job to tell yourself no. It’s not your job to reject yourself or grade yourself or debate the value or worthiness of your ideas. Your job is to create. Your job is to share. Your job is to overcome fear and run the race.

Yes, if you build something people might judge it or dislike it. But if you don’t create and share the things that you have inside of you, then you’ll commit the far worse crime of rejecting yourself. You can either be judged because you created something or ignored because you left your greatness inside of you.

Now is as Good a Time as Any
hugh laurie

It’s a terrible thing, I think, in life to wait until you’re ready. I have this feeling now that actually no one is ever ready to do anything. There’s almost no such thing as ready. There’s only now. And you may as well do it now. I mean, I say that confidently as if I’m about to go bungee jumping or something — I’m not. I’m not a crazed risk taker. But I do think that, generally speaking, now is as good a time as any.
— Hugh Laurie (source)

It will never feel like the right time. Do not wait for someone to give you permission to begin. Nobody is going to tap you, nominate you, appoint you, or choose you and say, “Now, it’s time to start.”

Give yourself permission. Successful people start before they feel ready.

Artists Endure
friedrich nietzsche

To those human beings who are of any concern to me I wish suffering, desolation, sickness, ill-treatment, indignities – I wish that they should not remain unfamiliar with profound self-contempt, the torture of self-mistrust, the wretchedness of the vanquished: I have no pity for them, because I wish them the only thing that can prove today whether one is worth anything or not – that one endures.
-Friedrich Nietzsche, The Will to Power

Ultimately, the chance to persevere through self-doubt and fear and procrastination is one of the greatest opportunities we have for self-discovery. It is through creating that we find out who we really are and what we are truly made of.

Live in the arena rather than judging from the crowd. It’s more exciting down there. Whether you win or lose, the fight is the reward.

The Bottom Line

Can anything be sadder than work left unfinished?
Yes; work never begun.
-Christina Rossetti

3 Critical Rules for Making a Living From Your Passion

You have a boring job like almost everyone else you know, and you also have a crazy passion that you wish someone would pay you for.

But getting paid to do what you love isn’t for real. The idea is laughable really. I mean, who is going to pay you to drink wine or fly toy airplanes?

Actually – surprise! – you can get paid to do what you love, if you follow a few critical “rules”.

Here’s how you can take your passion and turn it into something you can get paid to do.

Rule 1. Love Your Own Business: Businesses that start with a passionate idea can fail because at their center there is often just passion and not a solid business plan. When this happens, people conclude that they can’t get paid to do what they love when the truth is it wasn’t necessarily about the idea, it was about the execution.

The rule here is that you need to be sure that you do want to be involved in the business operations, and aren’t just enamored with the idea of a business around your passion. If you love business as much as your idea, then make sure there is a market need, do everything you can to set yourself up for success, and go for it!

Rule 2. Don’t Give Up On Your Dream Job: Yes, this can seem impossible, but it doesn’t have to be. Someone, somewhere has done what you want to do, and you may be able to, too. The rule is that you can’t give up without first examining the situation.

Ask yourself:

  • What are the barriers to getting there?
  • Are the barriers real, or are they just fear talking?
  • If they are real, are they insurmountable, or are they barriers you are willing to work to overcome?

It may be that your dream job is out of your reach or really doesn’t exist, but it may be that with a little work on your fear or on your resume, you could be doing what you love and getting a paycheck.

Rule 3. Find Your Almost Dream Job: Maybe you’ve discovered your dream job is out of reach, doesn’t exist, or simply would take more effort than you’re willing to expend to get to.

Still, there are things about it you’re drawn to. What are they? If you can figure out very specifically why you love your dream job, you may be able to transplant some components of that into a job you actually can find.

For example, maybe no one will pay you to drink wine all day. But someone will pay you to be a sommelier, a wine buyer, or to work in a fine dining restaurant, and maybe one of those appeals.

Rule 3 is you must be creative and flexible to find a job that incorporates as many of the components of your dream job into it as possible.

Getting paid to do what you love isn’t impossible. It just takes a bit of work and following these rules. Good luck!

The Force of Beauty

The Force of Beauty

The market for commercial beauty products exploded in Third Republic France, with a proliferation of goods promising to erase female imperfections and perpetuate an aesthetic of femininity that conveyed health and respectability. While the industry’s meteoric growth helped to codify conventional standards of womanhood, The Force of Beauty goes beyond the narrative of beauty culture as a tool for sociopolitical subjugation to show how it also targeted women as important consumers in major markets and created new avenues by which they could express their identities and challenge or reinforce gender norms. As cosmetics companies and cultural media, from magazines to novels to cinema, urged women to aspire to commercial standards of female perfection, beauty evolved as a goal to be pursued rather than a biological inheritance. The products and techniques that enabled women to embody society’s feminine ideal also taught them how to fashion their bodies into objects of desire and thus offered a subversive tool of self-expression. Holly Grout explores attempts by commercial beauty culture to reconcile a standard of respectability with female sexuality, as well as its efforts to position French women within the global phenomenon of changing views on modern womanhood. Grout draws on a wide range of primary sources-hygiene manuals, professional and legal debates about the right to fabricate and distribute “medicines,” advertisements for beauty products, and contemporary fiction and works of art-to explore how French women navigated changing views on femininity. Her seamless integration of gender studies with business history, aesthetics, and the history of medicine results in a textured and complex study of the relationship between the politics of womanhood and the politics of beauty.

Apple, the FBI, and Our Pathetic “Debate” About Privacy

Who’s ready for another round of Shoot the Messenger of Potentially Catastrophic News for Millions of Americans?

It appears, for one, that the Justice Department is. Following Apple’s denial of an F.B.I request that the tech-giant create a new version of its operating system to help break into the phones of the San Bernardino killers, the DoJ decided not to contribute to a robust debate over privacy, but to claim that Apple’s refusal “appears to be based on its concern for its business model and public brand marketing strategy.”

William Bratton, the police commissioner of New York City, also seems to want in. In his truly bizarre op-ed in the New York Times, he argued that Apple’s denial of the F.B.I’s request may be due not to an authentic concern over user privacy worthy of a 1,000-word public letter from the company’s CEO, but a clever trick to help “sales by offering more privacy and security.”

I know, you’ve heard this story before. After all, when Edward Snowden released thousands of documents uncovering a vast surveillance and cover-up effort by the U.S. government, the public became obsessed not with the difficult ethical questions of weighing privacy and security, but with the strange question of whether Snowden is a hero or a patriot.

Why is the American public so impervious to a vigorous discussion about privacy?

Perhaps it’s because we don’t understand it all that well. Take the oft-cited recent poll from the Pew Research Center, which found that 51% of Americans believe Apple should unlock the iPhone. But when the question is framed as “In response to court order tied to ongoing investigation of San Bernardino attacks, Apple should unlock/not unlock iPhone,” as the Pew poll was, what exactly do you expect the result to be?

If the question was framed, more accurately, as: “Should Apple create a new version of iOS that can be used to break into any iPhone, anywhere, and hand it over to the F.B.I,” I’m guessing the results may have been a little different. And I’m guessing that if people knew that accomplished hackers are able to easily break into encrypted iPhones, and that the F.B.I’s broad request is thus incredibly unnecessary, the results may have swung in the other direction.

But more likely, the shallowness of the debate surrounding privacy is due to the willingness of public officials, from Bratton to those in the DoJ, to dismiss the concerns of a major tech CEO as “hyperbolic” or nothing more than a PR stunt, or to frame the debate through ignorantly simplistic declarations such as “dead people have no privacy rights.”

The government ordering a company to create a master key that can break into any of our data-harboring iPhones is no small thing. You need not come to one conclusion or another, but let’s be careful not to dismiss the issue just because the DoJ, or the F.B.I, or William Bratton told us to.

5 Apps To Help You De-Stress And Sleep Easy

Sleep and mental health are undeniably linked. Daily routines, especially the hectic, busy ones of college students, are easily disrupted by sleepless nights. All-nighters have historically been linked to productivity and discipline, but the reality is far from productive. It’s scary to consider how normalized all-nighters have become in the college climate.

While the simple remedy to exhaustion is sticking to a set sleep schedule, doing so is much easier said than done. If you’re looking for a little assistance in getting your nightly rest, help is right at your fingertips. These five free smartphone apps will help you manage your stress and sleep easier at night. Keep in mind that using your phone before bed is a known culprit in obstructing sleep, so leave it in airplane mode to minimize distractions.

This Lawyer’s First Supreme Court Case Will Decide The Fate Of Abortion Rights

The night of Nov. 7, 2006, Stephanie Toti slept on the sidewalk in front of the Supreme Court.

It was pouring rain, but the Capitol Police would not let the 26-year-old and her colleagues pitch a tent. So they laid in sleeping bags on the concrete, miserable, huddled together. The next morning, they stood in line in their soaking-wet clothes, hoping to get seats for oral arguments in the most important abortion rights case of the last decade.

After camping in the rain all night, Toti and her co-workers — junior employees at the Center for Reproductive Rights, a legal advocacy group that defends abortion rights around the globe — managed to nab a few spots in the last row.

“Some of our colleagues who had tickets to the arguments came around in the morning and brought us suits so we could change our clothes after we got into the courthouse and be appropriately dressed,” Toti said. “I remember sitting in the back and thinking, ‘Wow, this courtroom is so big!’”

Toti’s side lost. In a 5-4 decision authored by Justice Anthony Kennedy, the high court upheld the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act — a federal law passed in 2003 that prohibited a specific kind of surgical abortion procedure.

Now, a decade later, Toti is preparing to argue her first Supreme Court case — the most significant abortion trial of this century. On March 2, she’ll take the lead in oral arguments on Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt, a case that could determine whether women in Texas and across the country will have access to abortion services in their communities.

The case challenges the constitutionality of two Texas abortion restrictions passed in 2013 that were designed to shut down most of the clinics in the state. The decision will not only determine the fate of abortion access in Texas; it will also send a signal to other states about the appropriateness of similar laws.

Most litigators who argue big cases before the Supreme Court are white men who have done it before. An elite group of 66 lawyers — only eight of whom are women — argued nearly half of the cases before the high court from 2004 to 2012, according to a 2014 Reuters analysis of 17,000 attorneys. Some of those attorneys have argued dozens of cases before the court, and nearly half of them are graduates of Harvard or Yale law schools who clerked for Supreme Court justices after graduation. That narrow representation turns the court into what the Reuters investigators described as an “echo chamber.”

But in the most consequential abortion rights cases, the reproductive rights movement has repeatedly turned to relatively inexperienced women.

Sarah Weddington was 27 when she argued and won Roe v. Wade, the 1973 case that legalized abortion throughout the United States. Weddington had no previous experience with the high court. “Because I hadn’t been able to get a job with a law firm, I didn’t have any real experience,” Weddington told Ms. Magazine last year. “I had done one adoption for my uncle, some divorces for people with no real assets to divide up, a couple of wills for people with very little money. I had not done Big Law.”

In 1992, reproductive rights advocates chose Kathryn Kolbert to represent them in the case Planned Parenthood v. Casey, which challenged a Pennsylvania law requiring a 24-hour waiting period and spousal notification before a woman could obtain an abortion. Kolbert, then a 40-year-old attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, had only argued one case before the Supreme Court, but she claimed a narrow victory over Pennsylvania’s Republican attorney general. The court ruled that states can regulate abortion, but cannot place an “undue burden” on the right to obtain one.

Being underestimated is “frustrating, but motivating,” Toti said.

Toti, who is now 37, has argued dozens of abortion cases in district and federal courts, and she briefly clerked for U.S. District Court Judge Gina Gershon in New York in 2005. But she has never argued before the Supreme Court. She lives in a modest walk-up apartment in Brooklyn with a roommate and occasionally attends Catholic mass with her sprawling Italian-American family on Long Island.

She is humble and soft-spoken in our interview in her office in Manhattan, which is filled with cards bearing supportive messages from her co-workers: “Uteruses before duderuses” and “Ovaries before brovaries.” Her nails are painted bright purple — her favorite color, and also the color of the marketing materials for Whole Woman’s Health, the chain of Texas clinics she represents.

Toti’s opponent, Texas Solicitor General Scott Keller, argued two cases before the Supreme Court in 2015, and clerked for Justice Anthony Kennedy — the justice expected to be the swing vote in the case.

Keller’s team doesn’t appear to be taking its less-experienced female opponent seriously. As the case wound its way through the lower courts, Toti repeatedly had to remind the Texas attorneys that she is the lead counsel on the case. But they consistently directed communications to her co-counsel — a taller, slightly older man from the international law firm Morrison & Foerster. “They would always reach out to him and not even ‘cc’ me,” she said. “I would get back to the lawyers and say, ‘Here is our position,’ and the next time they would go back to him anyway.”

Toti’s co-counsel, Alex Lawrence, said the Texas attorneys are ignoring his colleague because she’s a woman. “I feel bad about it, but yes, it’s true,” he said in a phone interview. “They’re not comfortable with it completely. Maybe it’s a Texas thing, or maybe it’s just a man thing.”

Being underestimated is “frustrating, but motivating,” Toti said. And she needs the boost — the outcome of her first Supreme Court case will determine whether millions of American women will still be able to access abortion in their states.

“I definitely feel the pressure,” she said. “So much hangs in the balance.”

In the 2010 midterm elections, a new crop of ultra-conservative Republicans swept statehouses across the country, bringing with them a fresh determination to rid the country of legal abortion. Over the next five years, these lawmakers passed an unprecedented number of abortion restrictions that shut down dozens of clinics across the country. Their strategy was simple: Instead of passing outright bans on legal abortion that would be difficult to defend in court, states passed so many new regulations on abortion clinics and doctors that few providers would be able to meet the requirements and stay open.

In 2013, Texas enacted two of these so-called TRAP laws (“TRAP” stands for Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers). The laws mandate that all abortions take place in ambulatory surgical centers, or mini-hospitals, and that all abortion providers must have admitting privileges at a nearby hospital. The extensive renovations required to turn a clinic into a mini-hospital, such as specific hallway widths, large janitors’ closets and new ventilation systems, are too expensive for most clinic owners to undertake. And hospitals in Texas often refuse to grant admitting privileges to abortion providers for political or religious reasons that have nothing to do with the doctor’s experience or safety record.

By the middle of 2014, 20 of the state’s 42 clinics had shut down, forcing many women in poor, rural areas of the state to travel up to 300 miles to the nearest clinic. Women’s health advocates complained that the restrictions did not appear to be medically necessary — abortions are already remarkably safe, and in the event of an emergency, hospitals have to admit women whether the doctor performing the abortion has admitting privileges or not. “These laws don’t provide any material benefit to abortion patients,” Toti said.

In August 2014, the Center for Reproductive Rights — with Toti as lead counsel — sued Texas, arguing that the new restrictions were irrelevant to women’s health and imposed an unconstitutional burden on their access to safe and legal abortion. Toti won in district court and lost in the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. In November, the Supreme Court agreed to take the case.

Toti’s task in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt is to convince the court — specifically, Kennedy — that the new regulations are not medically necessary, that lawmakers passed them with the sole intent of eradicating legal abortion in Texas, and that the rules do indeed impede women’s ability to exercise their constitutional right to an abortion.

Her team has taken a novel approach in its argument, submitting a document to the court in which 113 female attorneys share stories of their own abortions and explain how access to the procedure allowed them to break the cycles of poverty, abuse and teenage motherhood in their families and rise into successful careers.

The state of Texas will argue that the clinic regulations are necessary to protect the health and safety of women. “The state has wide discretion to pass laws ensuring Texas women are not subject to substandard conditions at abortion facilities,” Ken Paxton, Texas’ attorney general, said in a statement when the Supreme Court agreed to review the case last November.

The death of conservative Justice Antonin Scalia earlier this month does not change much about Toti’s case. If Kennedy sides with Whole Woman’s Health, the Texas restrictions will be struck down. But if he sides with the state, that will create a 4-4 tie, which will mean that a lower court decision that upheld Texas’ abortion restrictions will stand.

As she prepares for next week’s oral arguments, Toti is trying to avoid psychoanalyzing Kennedy. Instead, she is practicing with experienced Supreme Court lawyers who shoot rapid-fire questions at her in moot courts, interrupting her as the justices will. These dress rehearsals can be humbling.

“There have definitely been moments of remorse,” she said. “Everyone’s jumping in and asking these really hard questions, and I reach a point where I’m like, ‘When is this going to end?’”

At the gym or at the grocery store, Toti listens to audio recordings of past oral arguments on her headphones. Sometimes a dream about the case will wake her up in the middle of the night, and she’ll jump out of bed to scribble down the ideas cycling through her head. The notes rarely make any sense the next morning. “I’m not going to give you a specific example,” she said, laughing, “because I don’t want to tip off the other side to the kind of nonsense I’m coming up with.”

When the Supreme Court agreed to take the case, Toti’s bosses briefly considered replacing her with a more experienced Supreme Court lawyer. She lobbied to keep the case, noting that she had already taken the lead in district and appellate arguments. She convinced them. When she found out she’d argue the case, she was “really excited,” she recalled. “And then, you know, a moment later, slightly terrified.”

Lawrence, her co-counsel, isn’t as worried.

“Stephanie knows the case backwards and forwards,” he said. “Every nook and cranny of the case, she knows. That is an asset that cannot be undervalued.”

“I would not have wanted anyone else to argue this case,” he added. “Including myself.”

10 Tips for Healthy Arguments

So many quarrels are out of control quickly escalating to make things worse. Whatever the subject matter is, it’s soon forgotten and all kinds of stuff are dredged up to squabble over. But people need to speak about what upsets them so they can find solutions. How do they do it in a way that brings resolution in a healthy way?

10 Tips for Healthy Arguments

1. Keep the subject matter very narrow. Agree to the topic from the start.

2. If the topic strays to other matters, agree that each person will point this out and decide to stick to the original topic and save the other subjects for another time.

3. Above all, keep relatively or reasonably calm. Voice tones will rise and fall, but there needs to be a level above which no one goes. For example, no yelling, screaming, or shouting. If that begins, table the topic to later when everyone is calm.

4. Speak about what “I need, want, wish, hope, desire” not what “You should do for me right now!” Avoiding the you word is a big step that leads to even discussions.

5. Think before you speak. This means allow for pauses, silences, delays in responding. Expect the other person to be quiet now and then without taking it as a personal insult because you don’t receive an instant reply.

6. Keep hand motions to a minimum. It’s natural to speak with one’s hands but avoid finger pointing, touching including tapping, shoving, pushing, hitting, or any violent gestures.

7. When you feel responded to, say “thank you.” Recognize and validate the other person for listening and hearing what you say.

8. Think hard about what you intend before you speak. Many arguments fly out of hand because of misinterpretations.

9. Remember you want to be able to speak to this person later in a healthy way. Be mindful of their feelings when you choose your words. Nasty comments are hard to forget.

10. Above all, remember you are two human beings with differences and that differences are normal but need to be worked out to continue a healthy relationship. Sometimes one wins and the other loses out for this discussion. Other times there are compromises.

If you care about the relationship it’s easier to keep the argument in a healthy plane. If you are former friends or ex-spouses, perhaps the future of the relationship is less important to you, but it may very well affect others, such as children. So healthy arguments set a good example for others while leaving you feeling much more satisfied with the outcome.

Arguments are healthy unto themselves. That’s the key. It’s how they are carried out that is the measure of success.

How Reddit Saved The Life Of A Woman Having A Seizure

Anna Messner was horrified when she saw her fiancee begin to have an epileptic seizure thousands of miles away.

Messner was in Tennessee, chatting with her partner, Melody Madill — who lives in New Zealand — via Skype on Tuesday.

“I’ve never felt that terrified before,” Messier told the New Zealand Herald. “Sitting there watching her lips turn blue, frothing from the mouth and twitching violently was the worst moment of my life.”

Messner asked her brother, David Neal, to call emergency services in the city of Dunedin, but his cell phone wouldn’t allow international calls outside of North America. He tried calling 911 in his own city, but the operator told him they were unable to call New Zealand. That’s when Neal took to Reddit’s r/NewZealand forum to try and find someone in the country who could call for help.

Jana Hayes, a 24-year-old in the city of Christchurch, told Stuff.co.nz that at first, she worried the post was a hoax. But after seeing Neal had been a Reddit user for some time, she decided to take the chance and call 111 — New Zealand’s version of 911.

“I was worried they would think it was a joke,” she told Stuff. “I had to play it off, say it was mutual friend who had alerted me.”

To Messner’s great relief, a Reddit user came through, calling an ambulance and sending them to the address she had provided. McClelland, who was diagnosed with epilepsy as a child, is now doing fine.

“She’s literally saved my fiancee’s life,” Messner told the New Zealand Herald.

The two met online and have been together for a year and half, according to the Otago Daily Times, and Messner hopes to move to New Zealand so they can get married.

It’s About Human Rights: Social Media Platforms Must Safeguard Citizen-Generated Content

Content shared on social media has ever-increasing potential to be used as evidence of wartime atrocities and human rights violations. However, traditional social media models are stifling activists and burying evidence. There is a need for more tools and technologies built specifically for activists.

User-generated content shared over social media is vital to the advancement of human rights by increasing awareness, encouraging action and providing evidence of abuses so perpetrators can be held to account. Despite the value of this type of media, existing technologies are restrictive of activists and grassroots organizations, meaning there is room for innovation to better accommodate the needs of these communities.

Mobile technology and social media are changing the way stories are told and who gets to tell them. Any protest participant with a cell phone and a data connection can produce a testament to be shared with the wider world. In nations where mainstream media is subject to state influence, the ideal way for anti-government activists to present their content to a wide audience is through social media.

These platforms are valuable tools to modern protest movements, allowing communication and organization between activists. But content shared on social media related to these movements is equally valuable to the traction of human rights campaigns. A compelling piece of citizen journalism shared through a peer-to-peer network can act as a rallying cry, galvanizing supporters and influencing bystanders, creating a ripple of influence that causes others to stand against violations and attempt to change the status quo.

Content shared on social media has increasing potential to be used as evidence of wartime atrocities and human rights violations. And in many cases, citizen journalism is the most reliable means of communicating news to a global audience. Countless examples of first-hand video from the civil war in Syria, uploaded to YouTube and shared via Facebook and Twitter, provide a trove of evidence unparalleled in contemporary conflicts. In Ukraine, pro-government forces and separatist rebels alike have shared posts on social media purporting to show evidence of Russian participation in the conflict.

This raw content acts as an unfiltered record, giving it immense value and the potential to hold perpetrators of human rights violations and the powers that support them accountable. Following verification and forensic reconstruction by prosecutors and human rights advocates, these videos are potential evidence that may one day be brought before an international court.

Despite the impact and influence of social media on the advancement of human rights, existing technologies aren’t doing enough to meet the needs of activists, or to broadcast and preserve the important content they generate.

Twitter has been the primary platform in many human rights campaigns and popular uprisings. However, flaws inherent in the technology have worked to silence activists and prevent the efficient archiving of media. Content can be subject to deliberate concealment: when protesters in Mexico adopted the hashtag “#YoMeCanse” to demand answers in the case of the missing students of Ayotzinapa, bots employed by pro-government entities spammed the hashtag until it was useless in the consolidation of information and the organization of activists in the field. This phenomenon can also happen organically, as is often the case in the progression of a movement, when hashtags meant to amass media are morphed or dropped altogether as a protest becomes a conflict.

Another platform activists rely on suffers from a distinct yet similar set of problems. Facebook’s ongoing crackdown on pseudonyms has created an unsafe environment for activists and whistle-blowers fearing government reprisal, and censorship from the platform’s administrators has resulted in the exclusion of dissidents. In recent years, accounts managed by supporters of the Syrian opposition have been suspended for posting content Facebook has judged to contain “graphic imagery” or “calls to violence.”

Facebook also requires organizations to pay for a “boost” in order for their content to reach every follower. Unfortunately, this tactic aimed at businesses also affects grassroots organizations, which often lack the material means to pay such a promotion. To compound this, Facebook newsfeeds are reliant on an algorithm governed by “likes,” which can result in content from conflict zones being concealed in favour of lighter fare.

These deficiencies of traditional social media mean there is room for emerging technologies built specifically for the needs of activists, taking into consideration user security, censorship circumvention and wide-ranging message reach. In 2010 our organization, Majal, launched CrowdVoice.org, a platform that uses crowdsourcing and crowd-verification to archive and preserve content created by social movements. Users do not have to sign up or provide any identifying information to contribute to these archives. The project has since grown considerably, now including interactive contextualizing features in the form of timelines and infographics.

CrowdVoice has had an impact as a resource for citizen media that can be difficult to access on traditional platforms. Media outlets like The Guardian, Al Jazeera, and UN News Centre have showcased evidence of abuses gathered by CrowdVoice to illustrate a wide range of issues, from the conflict in Syria to the abuse of migrant workers in the Persian Gulf. As a further testament to its impact, CrowdVoice was censored in both Yemen and Bahrain after local activists adopted it to collect evidence of abuses by these governments.

As new citizen media from protests and conflicts is uploaded and shared across the web, emerging and existing platforms must prove they are committed to hosting valuable citizen-generated content with attention to its safekeeping and integrity, careful archiving of media in a way that is searchable and accessible, and no monetary cost to promote visibility. Likewise, we as a global community must safeguard and support those who take risks by sharing this evidence, allowing for anonymity and employing enhanced digital security. Only continued innovation geared towards the needs of the communities generating this evidence will ensure citizen media’s full potential for bringing about awareness, action and justice.

Three Challenges

1. Emerging and existing social media platforms must continually strive to protect user data and identities, and guard against bad actor surveillance.

2. Ongoing government censorship makes it difficult for users in certain regions to access critical media, particularly on mobile networks, where it’s more difficult to bypass.

3. We must find new and better ways to gauge the veracity of content posted to social media. Verification can never be entirely automated, but requiring all content to be checked using manual labour can overwhelm grassroots organizations as they attempt to separate fact from fiction.

A Life in Search of Happiness

Happiness is a term that is found in just about any industry or topic that you can find. It is used by well-intentioned people to describe a benefit, it is used by marketers and business people to sell a product or service, and it is what humans believe we desire the most in this world.

In fact, happiness is far more elusive and far less useful for our satisfaction in the world than we might expect. As Daniel Gilbert, the author of “Stumbling on Happiness,” explains, there are all types of things that actually make us happy and many times we don’t really know what that is.

Time and Happiness

One of the stand-out messages in the book includes how humans perceive time and the happiness that comes with that. He explains that as people do more novel and interesting things in their lives, they are able to experience time more slowly and thus savor it more. That is why adding exhilarating experiences that make you feel alive are the ones you savor and remember the most.

Memory and happiness stretch when you are engaging in certain practices that mean the most to you. Usually it is the experience of doing something novel, but in general terms it could just include doing more play with your friends or family.

According to Gilbert, one of the best ways to add more happiness to your life is to engage in activities that are novel, create a vivid and memorable experience, and cannot be easily or often replicated.

What Really Makes Us Happy?

The other question that Gilbert raises is “what really makes us happy?” Most humans think that we know what will help to make us happy, but our actions tell a different story. For example, he discusses “hedonic-adaptation,” which basically states that humans are great at adapting to whatever happens in their life whether it is good or bad.

When measuring happiness, humans misestimate how impactful a good or bad event might be for their lives. The fear of something bad happening is almost always worse for happiness than the bad event itself!

Takeaways — Searching for Happiness

At the end of the day, statistics and personal experience show that happiness is often elusive if you approach the topic in the wrong way. If you are focused on gaining more experiences with loved ones and people that you enjoy spending time with, you’ll be able to find happiness without doing much searching.

Even Just A 5 Percent Weight Loss Has Big Health Benefits

Good news for anyone who is obese and trying to get healthier: Losing just 5 percent of your body weight can lead to significant improvements in insulin sensitivity, which can reduce the risk of major health issues like Type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to a study published Monday in the journal Cell Metabolism.

“Even though five percent weight loss may not have dramatic cosmetic benefits, it does have significant health benefits,” said the study’s author, Dr. Samuel Klein, director of the Center for Human Nutrition at Washington University School of Medicine. “You’re much healthier on the inside, and it’s a really reasonable and legitimate target for people with obesity.”

This study clarifies conventional wisdom among obesity experts, who have traditionally advised patients to lose 5 to 10 percent of their body weight in order to improve blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels. But as anyone who has ever tried to lose weight can attest, there is a big difference between 5 percent and 10 percent.

“That’s a very vague, wide range,” Klein said. “It’s much harder to achieve a 10 percent weight loss than it is to achieve a five percent weight loss.”

Klein said his study shows that even just a little bit of weight loss is enough to improve health, and that people who can’t go beyond 5 percent shouldn’t feel like they failed.

As part of the study, Klein recruited 40 obese men and women for a randomized controlled trial of health outcomes at weight losses of 5, 10 and 15 percent. He randomly assigned half of participants to weight loss and the others to weight maintenance, and found that people who lost five percent of their weight had a loss of about eight percent in body fat mass, a seven percent decrease in intra-abdominal fat volume, and a 40 percent decrease in liver fat, which can contribute to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and cirrhosis.

That five percent weight loss also significantly lessened the concentrations of levels of glucose, insulin and triglycerides in their blood, a decrease that’s linked to a lower risk of cardiometabolic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Finally, the five percent weight loss also resulted in lower heart rates and systolic blood pressure.

The subjects randomized to weight loss were studied three weeks after achieving eatch level of weight loss — five, 10 and 15 percent — and the more weight they lost, they more these health markers continued to improve. But there’s no question that a loss of just five percent resulted in significant improvements in health, said Klein.

“We did think that five percent weight loss would be beneficial, but we were surprised at how it affected so many organ systems simultaneously,” said Klein. Previous, smaller studies had indicated that a five percent weight loss wouldn’t influence certain health markers, he explained, but his study results show that even a moderate amount of weight loss can have metabolic benefits.

About one-third of American adults are obese, but Klein and others have questioned the relevance of the label “obese” as determined by the body mass index ratio. A. Janet Tomiyama, a researcher at University of California, Los Angeles, points out that despite long-standing, well-researched associations between obesity and chronic disease on a population level, a person’s weight actually isn’t a very reliable predictor of heart health or diabetes risk.

Instead, Tomiyama points out, large portions of technically overweight, obese and morbidly obese people, according to the BMI ratio, are in fact metabolically healthy, while people of “normal” weight can also be metabolically unhealthy.

Asking metabolically normal but obese people to lose weight could be a waste of time, she argues, as well as contribute to fat stigma and “anti-fat bias.”

If you’re obese and your doctor has advised you to lose a little bit of weight to improve your insulin sensitivity or lower your blood pressure, even a little bit of weight loss can make a measurable impact on your health. Klein’s hope is that this message becomes self-reinforcing, encouraging unhealthy obese people to maintain their weight loss and perhaps even keep going.

“If you can lose five percent, which is much easier to do than 10 percent, you will have significant health benefits if you can keep that way,” he concluded.

Reinvesting in Infrastructure Would Boost State Economies

State and local investment in transportation, public buildings, water treatment systems, and other forms of vital infrastructure has fallen to a 30-year low.  Reversing this decline is key to creating good jobs and promoting full economic recovery — and it’s an especially good time for states to do it, as we explain in a new paper.

2016-02-23-1456251615-1593087-22316sfpf4.png

The condition of roads, bridges, schools, water treatment plants, and other physical assets greatly influences the economy’s ability to function and grow.  But rather than identifying and making the infrastructure investments that provide the foundation for a strong economy, many states are cutting taxes and offering corporate subsidies in a misguided approach to boosting economic growth.  Tax cuts typically spur little to no economic growth and take money from schools, universities, and other public investments essential to producing the talented workforce that businesses need.

States’ neglect of infrastructure has serious consequences for the nation’s growth and quality of life as roads crumble, school buildings become obsolete, and outdated facilities jeopardize public health.

States — the primary stewards (along with local governments) of the nation’s infrastructure — should address unmet infrastructure needs now.  Here’s why:

  • The investment will improve state economies, now and in the future.  Higher-quality and more efficient infrastructure will boost productivity in states that make the needed investments, lifting long-term economic growth and wages.  In the short term, even though the job market is recovering, millions of Americans are working less than they’d like and making less than it takes to get by.  Key infrastructure investments would provide immediate job opportunities.
  • Opportunities to finance infrastructure investment abound.  States often pay to build new schools, roads, airports, water treatment facilities, and the like using debt, a sound practice for financing infrastructure that can serve generations.  Today’s historically low interest rates are especially favorable to such borrowing, and state and local debt is below pre-recession levels.  States can also use other revenue sources, including user fees (like tolls) and federal grants.
  • States can better afford these investments than in the past several years.  State revenues are finally above pre-recession levels, better enabling them on average to afford infrastructure investments.  But in many states, revenues aren’t sufficient to adequately cover the costs of needed services such as education and health care and still make the necessary infrastructure investments.  These states should consider tax increases to preserve public capital that’s crucial to long-term economic growth while meeting other needs.

Learning to Say ‘No’

This is an issue that is of particular interest to me, as it is an issue that I struggled with for years myself. The ability to say “no” comes easier to some, but feels virtually impossible to others. Many people are very comfortable with saying “no” when their plate is too full, or they simply do not want to do something. Other people find it almost unbearable to say no, no matter how busy they are, and how much they do not want to do a task. Hopefully these quotes will illuminate why it is easy for some, virtually impossible for others, but important for all nonetheless.

1) “There are often many things we feel we should so that, in fact we don’t really have to do. Getting to the point where we can tell the difference is a major milestone in the simplification process.” — Elaine St. James

2) “Let today mark a new beginning for you. Give yourself permission to say NO without feeling guilty , mean, or selfish, Anybody who gets upset and/or expects you to say YES all of the time clearly doesn’t have your best interest at heart, Always remember: You have a right to say NO without having to explain yourself, Be at peace with your decisions.” — Stephanie Lahart

3) “Say no to everything, so you can say yes to the one thing.” — Richie Norton

4) “It takes heart to say no when our heart and brains and guts and most important, pride are yearning to say yes, Practice.” — Cole Harmonson

5) “You have to learn to say no without feeling guilty, setting boundaries is healthy. You need to learn to respect and take care of yourself.” — Unknown

6) “Learn the art of saying no. Don’t lie. Don’t make excuses, don’t over-explain yourself. Just simply decline.” — Unknown

7) “It is simple to say no when your priorities are in order.” — Unknown

8) “It’s only by saying NO that you can concentrate on the things that are really important.” — Steve Jobs

9) “Don’t say MAYBE if you want to say NO.” — Unknown

10) Saying yes to happiness means learning to say no to the things and people that stress you out.” — Thema Davis

11) “I refuse to please others at the expense of my emotional well-being. Even if it means saying “no” to people who are used to hearing ‘yes.’” — Unknown

12) “No is a complete sentence. It does not require justification or explanation.” — Unknown

13) He who trim himself to suit everyone else will soon whittle himself away.” — Unknown

14) “Saying NO means you know your limits.” — Unknown

15) “Say NO out of strength instead of YES out of weakness.” — Unknown

16) “Sometimes you have to forget what you feel, and remember what you deserve.” — Unknown

17) “You have to decide what your highest priorities are and have the courage pleasantly, smilingly, and non-apologetically — to say “no” to other things. And the way to do that is by having a bigger yes burning inside.” — Stephen Covey

18) “Not every opportunity it meant to be my assignment.” — Lysa Terkeurst

19) “When you say YES to others, make sure you are not saying NO to yourself.” — Paulo Coelho

20) “Simplify: say no to the good so you can say yes to the best.” — Unknown

Hopefully these thoughts have inspired and empowered you enough to consider when you may want and need to say “no” to others yourself. That saying so if not the end of the earth, but perhaps the end of being walked over, and of missing out on the opportunities that you want and should be saying yes too. It is about not over-extending yourself, and leaving room in your life for opportunities where you want and should be saying “yes.”

Learning to Love Yourself

We all know how much love can build us up or tear us apart. Love is a choice we make and it should be built with no conditions attached. One of the greatest gifts we need to give to ourselves is learning how to love every aspect of our beings. We cannot give to others what we don’t have. Love really is a must if we want our relationships to be healthy and to thrive.
When we take time to learn ways to love ourselves, some think of it as being selfish but it most certainly is not. The relationships that tend to be long lasting are those built with two people who love themselves, know themselves and take care of themselves. We must be able to recognize the areas of our life that we need work on and fine tune them before we seek anything else on a personal level.

Some of the ways you can love yourself is learning to say no and put yourself first. Find what your likes and dislikes are and take action accordingly. Learn to enjoy new adventures, sports, movies, write or take up a new hobby. Often times we wear many hats and forget to create time for exercise, take a bubble bath, get a massage, join a networking group or a single’s club at church. Find the activities you enjoy and go out once a week and have fun alone or with a friend doing them. You might find along the way you really enjoy some things you thought you never would. I also have found that I enjoy my alone time to meditate, pray, read books, have meaningful conversations, get involved with projects to make a difference in my community and use my voice to stand up for what I believe in. All of these examples are ways you can enjoy loving yourself and rewarding the person you are, the one you want to become and set attainable personal goals along the way.

Part of the process of loving ourselves, means we must be dedicated to getting better and making healthier decisions. We MUST learn to forgive ourselves, others and never live in the past. We have to keep moving forward and look ahead, not behind. Learn to eliminate and deal with past emotions, break ups, divorces, deaths, and failed business endeavors. When we don’t learn how to grieve, or feel our feelings we carry those emotions, problems and baggage with us wherever we go. People feel the effects of our unhealthiness and begin to distance themselves from our lives. Just when we are trying to get closer they are slowly moving away, because hurt people, hurt people. There has to be healthy outlets for you to self -express and let go of unwanted people, places and things, that no longer serve you. My suggestion is to journal your daily schedules, feelings and emotions so you know what it working and what isn’t. I would also encourage you to ask others for constructive criticisms so you can learn where you need to grow. Learn to ask for help, when you need it. A lot of people don’t like asking for help, are afraid to ask, and have been conditioned they can do it all on their own and honestly, it is extremely difficult being everything to everyone. When we take on the world, we get burnt out quickly.

Lastly, don’t allow anyone to tell you what is right for you. Only you know how you are feeling and what needs to be changed in yourself for optimal health. You deserve to love you, so others can love you the way you desire to be loved! Always be authentically yourself, and the right people will be in your life for the right reasons, when you are ready for it and them to show up. Be patient and know you deserve the best love life can bring to you, when you are ready, willing and able to accept it.

Bernie Sanders: The End of Cynicism

2016-02-23-1456216228-5990733-bernieonbigbanks.jpe

I’m a new kind of a voter. I was brought up in a dictatorship, in Iran, and don’t have much hands-on experience with democracy. I just googled it and it is best NOT to post photos of your ballot online. So you have to take my word for it.

I just voted absentee for the first time in a DNC primary. I sincerely hope it is not the last time I vote in a DNC primary because it is easier to make a party better than to start from scratch. Plus, I feel a certain loyalty to the party that gave us a president as great as Obama.

For the first time in my life, I see this cynicism, which has grown inside me over the years like a virus, fading — and boy does it feel good. I am so tired of being told and believing that cheating, lying and stealing is the way of the world. This notion, as closely held as the American dream, that the tougher you are, the more duplicitous you are, the more cold-blooded you are, the more likely you are to succeed. It must be a vestige of the days of Al Capone that somehow made its way into Business School textbooks. Some Mafia ethos swallowed whole by Wall Street. If the wealth didn’t trickle down the thieves’ ethos did, from Wall Street to Main Street.

At my first job in the U.S. I learned that the owner of the shop bought stolen goods from truck drivers. I also learned that she overcharged whenever she could. Literally stealing from customers on a daily basis tapping the wrong totals on the cashier. I soon understood that despite their geographic and political science naiveté Americans were not necessarily very honest when it came to business.

I remember an American economics teacher at The Community School, in Tehran, telling us this truism that stuck in my head: In business, if you can get away with it, it’s OK. She also taught us the saying: there is no such thing as free lunch. My Iranian head couldn’t really get around that one for a long time. Free lunches are an old tradition in my place of birth. Weddings, births, and especially deaths are all occasions for the giving of food to the poor. It took me a while to understand what that adage meant.

I feel bad for having passed this cynicism to my kids- having taught them that working within the system, no matter how corrupt, is the best route to success and fulfillment. You see, no mom wants her kids disappointed and struggling, or dead, as in the case of the Iran elections uprising not too long ago. We are moderates by instinct. But when a chance comes to make things better, to level the field, to promote fair play we jump on it. Because as women and traditional caregivers we instinctively understand the horrible burden of inequality.

I, for one, am tired of having to teach kids that the world is a horrible place. I’m tired of thinking that if you are not a loud-mouthed, aggressive, alpha bully you are not going to make it in this world. I want to show the children, our future, those not able to vote yet, that you can be a seventy-something who kept believing in his message of fairness till he upturned the entire notion of the bully as the successful American.

My cynicism weighed on me and I’m grateful to Bernie Sanders for having unburdened me. Imagine, living in a world where you have to teach your kids to be less good! Thank heavens, as the polls show, they didn’t listen. This election is not about a candidate or a party it is about restoring our integrity as citizens and parents.

This Might Be Why Your Hands Are Always Cold

By Kristine Thomason

To say my body doesn’t do well in the cold is an understatement. When the temperature drops, my fingers freeze, and often turn deep red, followed by white. On especially exciting days, they’ll look a little blue. “Cold hands, warm heart,” my mom used to tell me.

Growing up in sunny Southern California, this rarely happened–mostly just on ski trips or when I’d spend too long in the ocean. (Yes, I realize how obnoxious that sentence is.) But when I moved to New York for college five years ago, my blue hands became a winter mainstay. I’d never lived in a cold climate, so I assumed this happened to everyone in frigid weather.

Turns out I assumed wrong. On a trip to Chicago to visit extended family this past Thanksgiving, I went for a walk and returned to my aunt’s house with my signature blue fingers. “Oh, you must have Raynaud’s,” my aunt said. I must have what?

Naturally, I headed back to New York with a lot of questions, so I called up Melisa Lai Becker, MD, site chief of emergency medicine at Cambridge Health Alliance in Everett, Mass. Dr. Lai Becker described my experience as “the classic vignette that would open a textbook chapter on Raynaud’s disease.” (By the way, it’s pronounced ray-NOHZ.) So if you’re concerned you might also have Raynaud’s, here’s some info and advice from Dr. Lai Becker to help you (and me) out.

RELATED: Why Your Hands and Feet Are Always Cold and What to Do About It

How do I know I have it?
“The average person can go into chilly weather and get by without gloves, their fingers would just get a bit cold,” says Dr. Lai Becker. But someone who has Raynaud’s has a much more extreme reaction. “If you touch their hands, you can tell the difference,” she explains. “Even in a moderately cold environment, they have white, ice-cold hands.” In addition to getting cold, if you have Raynaud’s, your hands might turn white, then blue, and red when you start warming up again. But not everyone with Raynaud’s exhibits all three colors, or in that exact order. You might also experience these symptoms in other extremities including your ears, nose, lips, and even nipples (cringe!).

If you notice any of these symptoms, even simply getting cold and painful fingers, Dr. Lai-Becker recommends you see your doctor and possibly get a referral to a rheumatologist. A doctor will help you determine whether you have primary Raynaud’s (the most common type), or secondary, meaning it’s brought on by another condition.

How did I get this?
For primary Raynaud’s, genetics likely play a role. According to Mayo Clinic, about one-third of people with primary Raynaud’s (the most common type) have an immediate relative with the disorder. Although anyone can develop the disease, Raynaud’s is “overwhelmingly more common with women and generally first discovered in adolescence,” explains Dr. Lai Becker.

But for cases of secondary Raynaud’s (also called Raynaud’s phenomenon), the NIH says there’s usually an underlying cause such as nerve damage, injuries to hands and feet, exposure to certain chemicals, repetitive stress (like typing or playing the piano), medicines that affect blood pressure, or nicotine. Secondary Raynaud’s is less common, and doesn’t usually appear in adults until after age 40. However, since it tends to be a more serious condition, it’s important to see your doctor if you notice symptoms of the disease later in life.

Why do my hands turn blue?
Why the heck do you turn into a blueberry when it’s cold? “No one’s been able to say for sure what causes it,” says Dr. Lai Becker. “But we know one thing: cold can trigger the closing up of blood vessels.” If you have Raynaud’s, the arteries to your fingers and toes go into vasospasm–which means your blood vessels narrow and limit blood supply to affected areas, explains Dr. Lai Becker. Chilly temperatures generally trigger this phenomenon, whether that’s in the form of cold air or icy water. However, according to Dr. Lai Becker, doctors have also found an attack can be caused by emotional stress or hormonal changes.

Is it dangerous?
For the most part, Raynaud’s isn’t a huge concern, says Dr. Lai Becker, but it does increase your risk for frostbite. “Another thing that could happen is spasms,” she explains. “You have these tiny little blood vessels in your fingertips, and if they start to spasm, that makes it difficult for blood to get to your extremities.” This could result in sores or dead tissue. It’s also possible that blood circulation to your fingers and toes could stop entirely, leaving deformities. But don’t freak out–these conditions are extremely rare. But if for some reason they do occur, it’s important to seek treatment from your doctor immediately.

Can I treat it?
There are plenty of treatment options available, depending on the cause and severity of your Raynaud’s. “If it happens to be the primary problem, it’s not that big of a deal,” says Dr. Lai Becker. “It’s very manageable and there’s certainly medications you can take.” You can try anything from medications that widen blood vessels to nerve surgery to Botox injections. But for the most part, Raynaud’s is manageable without extreme treatment. “The best way to cope with it is to avoid a trigger, which is generally a change to cold weather,” says Dr. Lai Becker. “Plus, getting yourself a really good pair of gloves is essential!”

Since I don’t have plans to move back to sunny California in the near future, here are the next two things on my to-do list: schedule an appointment with my doctor, and invest in a hefty pair of mittens. Who’s with me?

Bill Gates Asks Young People To Fight Climate Change And Sexism

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation released their annual letter on Tuesday — and this one’s for the kids.

The Gates addressed this year’s note to the people they see as having some of the greatest impact when it comes to changing the world: high schoolers. Calling upon the next generation of world leaders, the letter asks young people to think about how they can be a force for good in the world.

The Gates pose the question, ”If you had one superpower what would it be?” and ask young people to think about their #superpowerforsocialgood.

The annual letter lays out the founders’ hopes, plans and the next destination for their funds to address global problems. In previous years they’ve focused on the next frontier in international development, such as mobile banking for the poor or the value of foreign aid

Here are 10 world problems Bill and Melinda Gates challenged young people to help solve in this year’s letter:

1. Change Your Lifestyle To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

“Many people, and you may be one of them, are also changing their lifestyles to conserve energy. They’re biking and carpooling to save gas, turning down the heat a couple degrees, adding insulation to their homes.

All of these efforts help cut down on energy use.” - Gates letter

2. Challenge Sexist Stereotypes

“This is 2016, not the 1970s or the 1950s. If you’re an American, three out of four moms at your school have a job. Your father probably does at least some cooking. The world has changed a lot.

I know from listening to my kids and their friends that most girls don’t think they will be stuck with the same rules that kept their grandmothers in the home. And most boys agree with them.” - Gates letter

3. If It Interests You, Pursue STEM In School

“If you’re someone with some crazy-sounding ideas to solve our energy challenge, the world needs you. Study extra hard in your math and sciences. You might just have the answer.” – Gates letter

4. Value Unpaid Work, Which Is Mostly Done By Women Globally. But Then Work To Create More Opportunities For Them As Well.

“Unless things change, girls today will spend hundreds of thousands more hours than boys doing unpaid work simply because society assumes it’s their responsibility.

Unpaid work is what it says it is: It’s work, not play, and you don’t get any money for doing it. Who packs your lunch? Who fishes the sweaty socks out of your gym bag?” - Gates letter

5. Learn About Why Energy Matters When It Comes To Helping The World’s Poorest

“If I could have just one wish to help the poorest people, it would be to find a cheap, clean source of energy to power our world.

You might be wondering, ‘Aren’t people just trying to stay healthy and find enough to eat? Isn’t that important too?’ Yes, of course it is, and our foundation is working hard to help them. But energy makes all those things easier. It means you can run hospitals, light up schools, and use tractors to grow more food.” – Gates letter

6. Give Girls More Time To Dream Big

“[Think of] the other things women could be doing if they didn’t spend so much time on mundane tasks. What amazing goals would you accomplish with an extra hour every day? Or, in the case of girls in many poor countries, an extra five or more?

Many women would spend more time doing paid work, starting businesses, or otherwise contributing to the economic well-being of societies around the world.” - Gates letter

7. Grasp The Reality Of Climate Change

“I’m sure you have read about climate change and maybe studied it in school. You might be worried about how it will affect you. The truth is, the people who will be hit the hardest are the world’s poorest.

Millions of the poorest families work as farmers. Changes in weather often mean that their crops won’t grow because of too little rain or too much rain. That sinks them deeper into poverty.” - Gates letter

8. Help Advocate For Paid Leave For Moms And Dads

“Studies show that when fathers are able to take time off from paid work when their children are born, they spend more time with their kids and doing other kinds of housework for years to come.

As a result, they form a stronger bond with their partners and children. That’s one reason why I think access to paid family and medical leave is so important for families.” - Gates letter

9. Invent New Tech To Help Improve Lives In Small Ways

“In poorer countries, most women still haul water, clean clothes by hand, and cook over an open flame. The solution is innovation, and you can help.

Some of you will become engineers, entrepreneurs, scientists, and software developers. I invite you to take on the challenge of serving the poor with cheap, clean energy, better roads, and running water. Can you imagine a machine that washes clothes using no electricity and very little water?” - Gates letter

10. Allow Yourself To Make Mistakes — That’s How The Best Ideas Come To Life!

“Many of these ideas won’t work, but that’s okay. Each dead end will teach us something useful and keep us moving forward.

As Thomas Edison famously said, ‘I have not failed 10,000 times. I’ve successfully found 10,000 ways that will not work.’

But to find thousands of ways that won’t work, you first need to try thousands of different ideas. That’s not happening nearly enough.” – Gates letter

The Insecurity Paradox

Life can change in the blink of an eye. Your number comes up and you win the lotto. Your doctor calls with a bad diagnosis. Your boss kicks you out without any warning. Your wife-to-be sits next to you on a plane.

Joan Didion puts it this way. “Life changes fast. Life changes in the instant. You sit down to dinner and life as you know it ends,” she wrote in The Year Of Magical Thinking. Her husband had died at the kitchen table. Nother was ever the same again.

This happens to all of us sooner or later. One minute, you’re in your normal life. The next, you’re in somebody else’s. The story you thought was yours is not. The future you saw in the cards has been cut. And all you can do is learn how to change.

These “shocks of the real” are enlightening, even when they hurt. I was reminded of this a few months back when Fate threw me a doozie. I was napping on the living room sofa, one ordinary spring afternoon, when my partner, David, shook me awake. “You have to see this right away.”

“I’m sleeping,” I told him.

“Get up. Now.”

David led me to his computer screen, which was opened to an email to me from someone I had never heard of, claiming to be my long lost brother. The note itself was extremely polite. “I don’t mean to intrude,” the sender wrote. “But we seem to have had the same father.” Now I was completely awake. I hadn’t heard from my father in 50 years; the last time I saw him, when I was 4, he’d tried to kidnap me before disappearing. As a kid, I’d adapted to fatherlessness by making up stories about why he left. It must not have been his fault. Something bad must have happened to him. My mother must have driven him crazy.

In fact, according to the sender, my father had moved to Illinois, started a second family, and told his new wife that my mother, sister, and I had been killed in a car accident. I couldn’t believe what I was reading. Perhaps my father wanted sympathy, or maybe he needed to invent a past to make himself seem more credible. Either way, the news was catastrophic — as far as my personal story went. Catastrophic means “to turn around” and that’s exactly what happened to me in that moment of unexpected reckoning. I had blamed my mother throughout my life for driving my father away; in fact, she’d been telling the truth all along about his lying character. Not only did he not want us, this man I never knew wanted us dead. Having grown up in a house of depressive women, I longed for a brother with whom to share this motherlode of childhood grief. Now I actually had one! This turnaround happened in less than a minute. An email arrived and my myth fell apart. Nothing would be the same again.

We think of Fate as something distant, a dramatic Hand waiting for us in the future, but Fate is with us all the time, biding its time, concealing its secrets. You’re having dinner with a family who have no idea that in two weeks their 14-year-old daughter will get hit by a car on her bike and be killed. You’re toasting New Year’s with a guy who will find out, at 11:45, that his father and stepmother have just fallen through the ice and drowned while walking their dog in a snowstorm. You’re enjoying Thanksgiving with another family who don’t know that, two weeks later, the father will die in his private plane in a freak accident. Fate is afoot at every moment. We just don’t notice because, as John Lennon said, “we’re busy making other plans” while life is actually happening.

When you’re young, you don’t believe this is true. Before you’ve been hit by the shock of the real, the illusion of permanence sustains you. You’re able to lock down your sense of self with words like forever, never, and always: the entitlement for being young. You get to believe, for a while at least, that bad things happen to other people, that the status quo is guaranteed. Then one day something cracks your glass house and you realize you’ve been inside a bubble. You realize that nobody’s born with control.

You see that your life is a work of fiction that’s constantly being rewritten. The plot you invented creates its own twists; your characters carry their own bizarre secrets. The comic parts can turn suddenly tragic, the dreaded episodes: moments of glory. The narrative arc turns upside down; the end turns out to be a beginning. There’s no making sense of any of it, none whatsoever. There’s only the living, the waiting to see. And if you’re lucky, curiosity, that keeps you open, game, and brave, eager to see what happens next. Bipolar Fortune spins her wheel and you hold on for dear life. You remember Martin Buber’s dictum. “Every journey has a secret destination of which the traveler is unaware.” What matters is that we stay interested. We never know what will turn out to be good news.

This reminds me of the story of the farmer and his horse. Once upon a time, there was a farmer whose horse ran away. All the neighbors came around to give their condolences. “So sorry that your horse has run away, that’s too bad.”

The farmer said, “You never know.”

The next day the horse came back, bringing seven wild horses with it. Everyone came around and said, “Oh, isn’t that lucky, what a great turn of events, you’ve now got eight horses.”

The farmer again said, “”You never know.”

The next day his son tried to break one of the horses and ride it, but was thrown and ended up breaking his leg. They all said, “Oh dear, that’s too bad.”

“You never know,” the farmer repeated.

The following day, the Army came around to recruit soldiers but they rejected his son because he had a broken leg. All the people came around and said, “How wonderful.”

You know what the farmer said.

Fate is rarely what it seems; that’s the only thing you can count on. A month after getting my brother’s email, I flew across the country to meet him. He’s a right wing, ex-police chief, who believes in the NRA and divides his free time between Bible study and golf. I’m a left wing gay man with Buddhist leanings who despises guns and all they stand for. The meeting was friendly, awkward, and inconclusive. We made a vow to stay in touch. What happens from here, God only knows. And that’s just fine with me.

How Grieving With Gratitude Saved Me

I began my journey towards a grateful life sitting in the parking lot of a funeral home.

On the back of an envelope containing my cable bill, I scrawled random thoughts; the serene beauty of the lake, the divers, his friends, the cool rain that mingled with my tears as I stood on the shoreline, the 4th of July fireworks that illuminated the night sky, as if heaven was welcoming my beautiful son home.

And so began what I call the most awake years of my life. My 23-year-old son Stephen was dead, and I was shattered into a million pieces. I was groundless, looking desperately for the rug that had been pulled from beneath my normal life, only to find that someone had taken the damn floor too.

So I surrendered to it. I had always thought I was a fixer, a woman of strength. But this time, I had nothing. Sitting on a bump in the sand at the edge of Jordan Lake, my life was stripped bare. I looked to the heavens and wondered if I would survive this pain, and begged for help. Grieving with gratitude was the answer I received.

It seemed counter-intuitive to even think of thankfulness at the darkest moment of my life. But I knew this was to be my path. From that moment, I knew that this was a conversation that I needed to have with others about how we perceive and journey through grief and loss.

So I started to write. My younger son Brendan and I agreed that if we could find “one little thing” each day to be thankful for, we would get through this. Each day we would look for simple blessings and I would write about it. On particularly difficult days, I could not even completely inhale because of the physical ache in my chest from the pain of losing my beautiful boy. So I would give thanks that this broken heart of mine continued to beat.

As the days, weeks and months passed, our list of tiny blessings continued to grow, bringing flickers of light and hope along with it. We found we couldn’t just limit it to one little thing any longer. Blessings were sprouting up all over the place. Butterflies, belly laughs with snorts included, fresh strawberries, naps, a letter from Stephen’s friend, birds, chats with my son or a moment of normalcy with my husband.

It did not change the pain of the loss. But it did alleviate some of the suffering. I started to see that all these one little things were actually the big things that really gave meaning to my life. This path of gratitude was healing me, and tethering me to the present moment as I grieved. And in the present moment, I was okay.

I decided to invite others to the conversation, and through the power of social media, connected with thousands of people from all over the world on their own personal grief journey. Each person’s grief was as individual as their fingerprint. Some grief was related to the death of someone dear; others suffered the ending of a relationship. I befriended people struggling against the grip of addiction, grieving the loss of their very sense of self. I have been humbled by their strength, and honored that they decided to walk with me for a while, looking for the simple blessings that they could tie together each day. Together, we’ve discovered that we can still be happy, even when things are less than perfect. We are having a new conversation about grief.

Six years later, I am often at a loss for words when people ask me how I feel about how much this has grown. I have released two books, and our Facebook group Just One Little Thing has over 120,000 members from over fifty countries speaking over forty languages. I like to call our members JOLT’ers, and I consider each and every one of them my family. They show up each day to give thanks, to talk about the good things happening in the world, and to share how they are making a difference in their neck of the woods.

It’s a little petri dish of humanity, and it is beautiful. Nothing thrills me more than watching a man from Ireland encourage a mother from Ohio, or a woman from British Columbia realize that she is working through the same grief as a young man in Egypt.

There is a man from Chicago who has applied the concept of JOLT to his work at an addictions center. There is a teacher in Africa who shared the message of JOLT to the children in her dirt floor classroom. Even horses have become JOLT’ers, with Equine Therapists sharing the message in Pennsylvania.

This happened because I decided to listen to that quiet voice within, and allow the transformative power of grief to guide me. My purpose now is to tell others that not only can they be okay, but that they find hope and happiness after hardship.

I now look at each day as a gift.

With each step I take and every ripple of hope that continues to circle the globe, I feel Stephen smiling.

And that is one big thing.
